INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (IB PYP)

PYP 1 - PYP 5

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Sheikh Zayed International Academy serves students from Play group till Grade 5(aged 3-12), offering a holistic education that nurtures holistic development by focusing on academic excellence as well as social, emotional, and physical well-being. Through our Transdisciplinary program of inquiry, students explore meaningful topics of local, national, and global significance, fostering international-mindedness and preparing them to become compassionate, engaged global citizens. Our vibrant PYP programme provides a stimulating and academically challenging environment where collaboration and inquiry- based learning are central to our teaching approach. Warm, supportive relationships between teachers and students create a strong sense of community, where risk-taking is encouraged and celebrated. Students are empowered to apply their learning to real-world situations, making a positive impact on their own lives and the lives of others.

NURTURING STUDENT AGENCY & COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

At SZIA, we understand that learning is a collaborative effort, where students and teachers work together to build knowledge. The enhanced PYP promotes student agency, encouraging learners to take initiative, express their opinions, and make informed decisions about their education. By integrating language, technology, and conceptual understanding, we foster curiosity, boost confidence, and inspire a lifelong passion for learning.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH
TO EDUCATION

Our PYP curriculum framework goes beyond academic subjects like Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and the Arts. We focus on five essential elements: Knowledge, Concepts, Approaches to Learning, Attitudes, and Action. This holistic approach equips students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to thrive academically and personally in a global context.

The PYP framework is built around six globally significant transdisciplinary themes. These themes support the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, and skills across traditional subjects, providing a cohesive and comprehensive learning experience that is revisited

An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health, human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

An exploration of human-made systems and organizations, looking at their structure, function, and impact on society, economies, and decision- making.

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

As a leading IB World School in Pakistan, Sheikh Zayed International Academy (SZIA) is proud to have been authorized for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) since 2018. Embracing the innovative Enhanced PYP framework, we foster a dynamic learning environment where students aged 6 to 11 become active agents of their own education. Our inquiry-based approach, centered on transdisciplinary themes, empowers students to explore real-world issues, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate a deep understanding of their role as global citizens. At SZIA, we recognize that learning is a collaborative process, where students and teachers work together to co-construct knowledge. The enhanced PYP emphasizes student agency, encouraging learners to take initiative, voice their opinions, and make informed choices about their education. Through the integration of language, technology, and conceptual understanding, we nurture curious minds, build confidence, and inspire a lifelong love of learning.

APPROACHES TO LEARNING

Approaches to Learning (ATL’s) are a cornerstone of the PYP at Sheikh Zayed International Academy (SZIA). These essential skills empower students to become self-directed, adaptable, and resourceful learners for life. Through inquiry-based projects, collaborative activities, and reflective practices, students develop critical thinking, communication, research, self-management, and social skills. ATL’s are seamlessly integrated into the PYP curriculum, ensuring that students not only acquire knowledge but also develop the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
